Kids Dentistry in Mumbai Gentle Dental Care for Children

Kids dentistry (pediatric dentistry) is dental care made for babies, children and teenagers: check-ups, cavity prevention and treatment of milk and permanent teeth. At Lokdant, children are treated by Dr. Ajinkya Sawant, an MDS pediatric dentist, in a calm and friendly setting so their first dental visits are positive ones.

Your child's first dental visit should be by their first birthday, or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing. After that, a check-up every 6 months keeps small problems small.

Why milk teeth need care

Many parents think milk teeth do not matter because they fall out. In fact, milk teeth help children chew, speak clearly and hold space for permanent teeth. A decayed milk tooth can cause pain, infection, and crooked permanent teeth if it is lost too early.

Signs your child should see a dentist

Brown, black or white chalky spots on teeth

Pain while eating, or crying at night holding the cheek

Swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gum

    Bad breath or bleeding gums

    Thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting after age 4

Teeth coming in crowded, or a milk tooth not falling out when the new tooth is visible

A tooth knocked or broken in a fall (see Emergency Dental Care)

Our kids dental treatments

Child dental check-up: exam, cavity check and brushing guidance for parents.

Fluoride application: a varnish that strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities. See Fluoride Treatments.

Pit and fissure sealants: a thin protective coat on the grooves of back teeth, where most kids' cavities start. See Dental Sealants.

Tooth-coloured fillings: for small and medium cavities in milk or permanent teeth.

Pulpotomy and pulpectomy (kids root canal): saves a badly decayed milk tooth instead of removing it.

Space maintainer: keeps the gap open when a milk tooth is lost early, so the permanent tooth comes in straight.

Habit-breaking appliances: help stop thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting that can push teeth out of line.

Gentle extractions: for milk teeth that are too damaged to save or are blocking permanent teeth.

Early orthodontic check: around age 7, to spot bite and crowding problems early. See Braces.

How we keep children comfortable

Tell-show-do: the dentist explains and shows each instrument before using it.

Short, positive first visits focused on building trust, not just treatment.

Parents can stay with their child during the visit.

Numbing gel before injections, so the needle is barely felt.

Simple words, no scary terms, and praise at the end of every visit.

FAQs — Kids Dentistry

By the first birthday, or within 6 months of the first tooth coming in. Early visits help catch cavities and let your child get used to the dentist.

Yes. Untreated cavities in milk teeth cause pain and infection, and early tooth loss can make permanent teeth come in crooked. Some milk teeth stay until age 11–12.

A pulpectomy is a root canal for a milk tooth. The infected pulp is removed, cleaned and filled with a material that dissolves naturally as the permanent tooth grows. It is safe and done under local anaesthesia.

Yes, in the right amount. Fluoride varnish applied by the dentist is a small, controlled dose that strengthens enamel. Children under 3 should use only a smear of fluoride toothpaste, and children aged 3–6 a pea-sized amount.

Talk about the visit positively and avoid words like "pain" or "injection". Our pediatric dentist uses tell-show-do and short first visits so children feel safe. Parents can stay in the room.

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, limit sweets and sticky snacks between meals, avoid putting a baby to sleep with a milk bottle, and get sealants and fluoride as advised.

Thumb-sucking is normal in babies. If it continues after age 4, it can push front teeth forward and change the bite. A habit breaker can help.

At Lokdant, a pediatric pulpotomy costs ₹1,500 and a pulpectomy ₹2,500. The dentist will tell you which one your child needs after an exam and X-ray.
